Just Do It – Proverbs 21:3

Doing what is righteous and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

Doing what is right and just requires forethought and intention. It forces one to make good, godly decisions in advance in order to live in accordance with what God has called us to. It indicates a deep motivation to please our Father in thought, word and deed. Thus, it reflects a heart that is seeking to submit to its Maker.

Sacrifice is typically offered for sin already committed. The ungodly act has already occurred and now one seeks forgiveness. It represents an offering for our lack of righteous and just living. Sacrifice can easily represent a lack of commitment and discipline in a life if one simply begins to view it as legalistic ‘sin cover’. It can become the out or cover for however WE want to live. We do what we want and then simply make sure we offer some sacrifice to cover selfish sins. In effect, we know we are going to do unrighteousness or be unjust but it’s okay, we’ll just offer a sacrifice and all is good. This legalistic mentality toward sin does not reflect a heart that is truly submissive to the will of God.

Father God seeks those who are serious about righteous, just living. He highly values the decision to walk in His way according to His justice. He loves the submissive heart in the same manner as we earthly parents value such in our children. The Proverbs writer makes it clear: walking in righteousness and justice is more acceptable than sacrifice.
