Judgmentalism never goes out of style. It’s so easy to condemn others almost anyone can do it! Often these condemnations contain at least a small grain of truth. Every person we encounter has done something stupid and wrongheaded and deserves condemnation. Before Jesus Christ walked this earth no other human had ever existed without the overhanging curse of condemnation. Adam and Eve seemed to have the best chance of accomplishing such and blew it, just as we all do (those who are honest among us, I mean.) As I told the folks at Faith Mission Wednesday night, we’re all just a bunch of mess ups. I just happen to be the Vice President of Non-Accidental Mess Ups. Unintentional sin is bad enough. Intentional sin sinks us. Condemnation awaits.
So, from my messed up perspective in my messed up body moved along by messed up motives I join David in claiming “sinfulness from conception” (Psalm 51:5). At least from this realization, the only way to go is up. Now, we are not so messed up that we cannot examine, understand and receive true truth. The truth of God’s word looms large for all but especially for mess ups like us. The truth of scripture shines like a beacon on a hill and is easily perceived in its goodness by all who will honestly encounter it. “Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” (Psalm 51:6) My refuge is in God alone. “…none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.” (Psalm 34:22b) Why not? Because, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1,2) I’ll avoid any overstated exclamations and simply say, come out of the corner. There is room in God’s grace.
Sometimes we just need to be reminded of God’s amazingly simple yet profoundly life changing truths.
