Hebrews 3:8
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion…
Hebrews 3:12
Watch out, brothers, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God.
Hebrews 3:18-19
And who did He swear to that they would not enter His rest, if not those who disobeyed? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
A hardened, insensitive heart promotes a rebellious spirit which naturally motivates unfaithfulness and disobedience. The heart is the seat of who we are and how we live. As one centralizes oneself around one’s own selfish desires, the heart hardens and it is easy to lose ‘friendship with Christ’ and lose one’s grip on the truth of the gospel which saves us. Faithfulness is critical and doable only through a heart that is inextricably tied to Lord Jesus. It is His faithfulness that saves us, so to lose our close friendship with Him is to put ourselves in a gravely dangerous situation. Christ must remain central and primary in all of our life and our faith. We must love what He loves and hate what He hates. We must hold the Written Revelation in high regard just as He did and apply it diligently to our lives. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. His Spirit within us promotes submission, faithfulness and obedience. His Word keeps our heart tender and true to the Truth that saves us. Living, vibrant, saving faith growing in our hearts and expressing itself in our lives is the result.
