Make Every Effort – 2 Peter 3:14-18

Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found at peace with Him without spot or blemish. Also, regard the patience of our Lord as an opportunity for salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him. He speaks about these things in all his letters in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures.
Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard, so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

To live in a culture of lawlessness is dangerous to our soul. Our commitment is challenged daily and the tendency is to be influenced into a state of pleasure induced stupor. The measure of all things for the lawless is ‘self fulfillment’ and personal pleasure. In a God denying culture it is the norm and to be expected.

For the believer, it is easy to be led astray by this mentality. It is easy to be lulled into an entitlement mentality regarding pleasure and life. Wickedness for the most part is easy. It requires very little of the one who pursues it; yet, exacts an extreme cost in the end. It is deceptive, insidious and mind-numbing.

The faithful believer must never assume he has no worry with evil and wickedness. We must not toy with it nor deny it. It must not be ignored nor patronized. It is destructive and must be guarded against. ‘Make every effort to have the peace that comes through the pursuit of purity’. ‘Be on your guard’. It still matters how we live! The image that comes to my mind is one of a fencing match where our sword is raised and we stand in the ready position, in the pose of battle, ready to move as God directs. Our sword is obviously the Holy Scripture given by God from the earliest days. We must not be fearful. We must be ready through faithfulness, goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection and unconditional love. We must be growing in the grace and the knowledge of Lord Jesus. Stand firm. Endure until the end. Christ is King!
