Therefore, Saul reassigned David and made him commander over 1,000 men. David led the troops and continued to be successful in all his activities because the Lord was with him. When Saul observed that David was very successful, he dreaded him. But all Israel and Judah loved David because he was leading their troops.
To truly serve and lead people you must be out among them at the Lord’s side. You can’t truly lead as God leads while locked away in the throne room. God is within and among His people. It’s how He leads and guides and directs. He knows those who are His own.
The same principle applies to us. We must be among those that we intend to serve and lead. It’s how we come to know and love them. David, the man after God’s own heart, went in and out among the people and by the grace of God won their favor. It was God’s presence with David and David’s presence among the people that brought David such great leadership success. The Lord was with him and he was with the people.
