Futility – John 5:39-40

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.

The Scriptures are critical in our search for eternal life; yet, to read and understand the Word and fail to submit to its Truth is the essence of futility. All Scripture ultimately points to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It is He alone who saves and the Scriptures point clearly and directly to Him. Reading the Bible and missing Jesus is something like reading the menu at a fine restaurant, ordering the skimpy little appetizers and never ordering the main course. It is easy to get caught up in the amazing facts of Scripture just as it is easy to get caught up with all of the options on a fine restaurant’s menu. But reading the Bible without seeing and receiving Jesus is an ultimate fail. God’s Written Revelation has always fundamentally served to point readers and seekers to the Lord Jesus.

Christ is perplexed that these scholars have read the Scriptures in order to find life but have failed to find Him. He is Life and always has been. One has to conclude that these readers and studiers simply did not want to find Him. They sought to justify themselves rather than receive His justification of them. This mentality is both futile and deadly. No man can meet God’s standards without Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Life and the Truth and it is our joy and eternal benefit to submit ourselves to this Truth. No one comes to the Father but by Him.

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God….John 1

Thank you Father God for Lord Jesus.
