But what does the Scripture say?
Drive out the slave and her son, for the son of the slave will never be a co-heir with the son of the free woman.
There are irreconcilable differences between the nature of the flesh and the indwelling Spirit. A set of rules will never permanently evict the spirit of ‘slavery to the flesh’. This slave to sin mentality must be evicted by the Spirit of God within us. Even adherence to a set of laws will not control this slave mentality and actually has a tendency to empower it as we take pride in our performance.
Internalizing the truth of God ‘dwelling within us’ is difficult because it is a bit of a mystery. We know by virtue of the Scripture that this is true.
‘Christ in you the hope of glory.’
‘Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.’
The experience of this truth; however, can be a bit confusing as the flesh continues to compete with the Spirit and is encouraged by our mortal enemy. Ultimately, the truth of God’s indwelling Spirit remains unshaken. We stand in this truth and daily our fleshly instincts and sins are overcome by His power at work within us. We have received the Spirit of God by faith and He will faithfully move within us to overcome our flesh for the glory of his Name.
