“For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
With our words we express the meaning in our minds and form relationships via the communication of our lips. God has also revealed His mind via His mouth in His Word. In a limited way, we enhance life with our words. In an unlimited, mind boggling way, God creates and gives life with His Word. These words He has shared are not just suggestions for a happy time. They aren’t simply ideas that seem good. They aren’t just verbal constructions that make us feel better. They are our life. They are the very words of God who used them to actively speak this world into existence. In them we live. Outside of them we die. These words are our life, the Life that is the Light of men. The basis for the relationship that saves us.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
As a very young man I memorized his passage from the New Testament and throughout my life it has served to inform my way in times of both blessing and struggle. It ties directly to this truth expressed in the Old Testament for God is outside of time and rules over all existence. Our high regard for God’s word is crucial whenever we consider Who has spoken and the implications of this speaking. Respect, honor and submission to this Word is a natural outworking of the truth of Who has spoken and exactly what He has said. It is a bit of a paradox and a mystery; yet, His words are truth and His Word is the Truth. We find our way in Him. We find the Truth in Him. In reality, He is our Life. It is the omnipotent, omniscient God of all time who has spoken and we are wise to heed Him and utterly ignorant to ignore or deny Him. These words are not meaningless. They define true meaning. He is the Source of all meaning and it is this Meaning that shines the Light of God into the darkness of our hearts bringing eternal life from death. Truly, this Hope springs eternal.
Thanks be to God for His Words and His Word. They are truly our Life.
