And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
Our life is defined by Whose we are not by what we ‘own’, as if we really ‘own’ anything. For those of us who have much, there is an ever present temptation to put our trust in our stuff. ‘The stuff of earth competes for the allegiance that we owe only to the Giver of all good things’ (Rich Mullins). Greed creates artificial need. We are not composed of the abundance of the material things we have. Regardless of what the Materialist says, the ‘Cosmos’ is not all there is.
He Is there. He is not silent (Francis Schaeffer).
Jesus is our life. Our things are only a facade of life. Cardboard cutouts, if you will.
More stuff ≠ more life.
More Jesus = more life.
Mathematic principles apply.Deliver us from the rule of our things, Lord Jesus. Protect us from the pull of our greedy hearts. Keep us from being possessed by our possessions. May all of our Hope be found in You. May our lives consist in the abundance of Your grace.
