Faith is the Victory

At the 4th Street Church of Christ, this song rang through the building often. It was one of my daddy’s favorites…

Encamped along the hills of light

You Christian soldiers rise

And press the battle ere the night

Shall veil the glowing skies

Against the foe in vales below

Let all our strength be hurled

Faith is the victory we know

That overcomes the world.

Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory!
O glorious victory, that overcomes the world

As I read the 10th and 11th chapter of Acts again, the power and effectiveness of faith in Christ Jesus just came flying out at me. The Holy Spirit simply opened my eyes again to the truth of and power of faith. Check this out…

Acts 10:43 “All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, “John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?”

And then look at Ephesians…

Ephesians 1:4 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in Him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 3:16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.

I could go on and on and on (as many of you have witnessed personally). Our faith is foundational and absolutely essential to our salvation. It is what keeps us connected with our Lord everyday. It is what enlivens us. It is how we received and continue to receive the Lord Jesus and His blessed Holy Spirit. It is how God’s great power is transferred to us.  It is our strong persuasion that God is both real and trustworthy.  Faith.

All of this considered, our faith is only made effective by its object. The object of our faith is the One who alone can bring hope, eternal life, forgiveness, and power to our lives. Our faith IN Christ Jesus becomes the faith OF Christ Jesus. Galatians 2:20 and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in (of) the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. The word “IN” in this passage can accurately be translated “OF”.  Actually, in a most fundamental way, Jesus Christ IS our faith.

Lift up your eyes of faith to the mountain of our God from whence comes our daily, hourly, minute by minute, second by second help. We walk by faith not by sight. The One in whom you have placed your trust is able to keep that which you have committed unto Him against that day. Even when you are faithless, He remains faithful. So imagine what is imparted to you as you continue to cast yourself upon Him in faith. I can only imagine…

Open the eyes of your heart that you may begin to see what is the breadth, length, height and depth of the love of Christ Jesus our Lord. He is truly able to do immeasurably more than all you can ask or imagine. What are you imagining? Where is your faith? Look up to the object of your faith. In Him alone is your hope and your salvation.

Faith is the victory…

Galatians 5:5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working through love.

Hallelujah!
