Then their whole assembly rose up and brought Him before Pilate. They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”
Their entire case against Jesus was founded on lies. Right from the start they were forced to fabricate charges because they knew that Lord Jesus had committed no sin. Jesus never subverted the nation. What a crock! He told His disciples to pay taxes. ‘Render to Caesar what is Caesars and to God what is God’s.’ Only this third accusation carried any truth. He was the Messiah and King and He claimed it. Yet, what crime was there in this if the claims He made were actually true? None. They simply would not face and accept the truth. So, they did as we often do – they sought to silence The Truth. But Truth cannot be silenced.
Little did they know that by their effort to temporarily silence Him, He would be forever empowered to speak into the lives of broken men and women. Thanks be to God for the suffering and humiliation of our Lord. By His stripes we are truly healed.
