Dwelling Place – Psalms 91:9

Because you have made the Lord — my refuge,
the Most High — your dwelling place…

This statement cannot be minimized. What does it mean to make the Lord one’s refuge? Mouthing His Name? Going to church? Simply assenting to His Lordship? In the context of this statement it seems to be much more than these.

There is the conscious decision. ‘You have MADE…’. The choice is clear and it is a result of your own free will to choose God – the Most High God. Certainly, ultimately, He chooses us; yet, He leaves the decision in our hands. I’ll leave that age old ‘Sovereignty of God’ argument to the ‘scholars’. Existentially, we must choose. We must make Him our dwelling place. We accept Him as our refuge – the place where we are saved and safe. We bow before Him to acknowledge that He is THE Most High. There is no other. Our allegiance is clear.

Clearly though, it is a whole life decision since for someone to be our dwelling place, we must LIVE in Him. He is our home. He is our life. Everything is addressed from His perspective. We dwell in Him. Our existence is defined by Him. All we are, all we have, all we do, all we say are born out of Him. He truly becomes our everything. We take delight in the Lord and He gives us the desires of our heart for now that we dwell in Him, His desires ARE our desires. He is all encompassing and the benefit is ours. We live in the Sovereign Father of all mankind. There can be no greater benefit.

Eternally, we are delivered from evil and the plague of sin for in Him we find true redemption – life forevermore. He is our dwelling place.

Psalms 91:14-15
Because he is lovingly devoted to Me,
I will deliver him;
I will protect him because he knows My name.
When he calls out to Me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble.
I will rescue him and give him honor.
