Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!
Irony of all ironies is that the high priest puts Jesus under oath before His Father, God, (I and the Father are One) and then promptly condemns Him to death for telling the truth.
It is not blasphemy if it is true. The high priest makes no effort to validate the statement because he has no desire for the truth. He simply seeks a reason to murder Christ.
How did Jesus have mercy on such arrogant, pious, dishonest prigs as these? The true love Jesus had in His heart and the self-restraint He showed in His words and actions were truly supernatural. Who could doubt that He was and is and ever will be God in light of this encounter? No other human on earth with the power Jesus had at His disposal to destroy those sniveling cowards could have withheld instant judgement and death for these. And yet we know that Lord Jesus truly loved them. He wept over their city because of their hard hearts. It is evidence of the amazing love of Christ and His true desire to save and not condemn.
