Jesus answered, “ I assure you: You are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal of approval on Him.”
Jesus knows us so well. We love to eat! We live to eat! Food is one of our greatest pleasures. An empty stomach is one of our least desired states of existence. We love those who fill our bellies. Our largest gatherings at church are typically around free meals. Free food brings believers out of the wood work. A good, hot meal with ‘no strings attached’ is one of the great marketing approaches used by organizations of all varieties. As it regards bringing people to faith, however, I’m not so sure it is very effective. Jesus knew this.
‘You guys only tracked me down because I fed you for free. Your gut is your god. Quit obsessing on earthly meals. Start focusing on eternal food.’ (A very loose paraphrase, of course.)
Ouch! Lord Jesus knows us so well. He knows what moves us and why it does so. He is not fooled by our outward actions. He knows our hearts, our motives and it is that which He addresses. He calls us to quit obsessing on the pleasures of the here and now. They will soon disappear. Quit making decisions of where you will go on this earth based on what you will eat when you get there. Stop spending all of your physical energy on the flimsy, temporary pleasures of this existence. This obviously includes more than just the physical pleasure of food. Invest your effort, set your sights on the food of God that is eternal. Fill your mind with the truth that will extend into eternity. Work for eternal things. Seek the One who has the seal of approval from God not the one who has the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. If you will put your effort into seeking Him, He will give you food that will last forever. His provision is not temporary it is eternal. He has the power over life and death.
