And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.
In the words of the famous Little Rascal, Stimey: ‘Death comes unexpectantly.’ Say what you will about these Little Rascals, Stimey nailed that one. Truth is truth even when spoken by a little boy in a silly television show. A classic and hilarious silly television show, mind you. Death will surprise us all. It is a surprising and difficult passage. What follows death, judgement, will be even more difficult for those who deny the reality of such an event. We all want justice and judgement, we just don’t want it for our sorry selves. ‘Don’t judge me! Certainly don’t let God judge me. I’m too busy playing God and judging everyone else.’ I think you get the point.
Yet, we will die and face judgement. Justice will be served. Christ will return and all will see Him – not only those those who are on the lookout for Him. It will be a day of reckoning for all of us. Our pictures of that day are vague and limited. There is simply a lot we do not know about that day.
We know this: Christ will return and those who are eagerly awaiting His return need have no fear. This return will be without consideration for the sin we have committed. He is the sacrifice for our sin and that work is done. His return will be without reference to this sin. There is no need. The price is paid. The judgement regarding sin in our lives has been given. Jesus has born our guilt, shame, humiliation and punishment. He has become sin for us. On that day, He returns to those who are watching the skies in anticipation of His return that He Himself might usher those into glory. ‘When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.’
Are you eager for His return? Do you long for a His appearing? Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!
