Wicked Insecurity – Isaiah 47:10

You were secure in your wickedness;
you said, ‘No one sees me.’
Your wisdom and knowledge
led you astray.
You said to yourself,
‘I exist, and there is no one else.’
But disaster will happen to you;
you will not know how to avert it.
And it will fall on you,
but you will be unable to ward it off.
Devastation will happen to you suddenly
and unexpectedly.

The ultimate end of human autonomy is insanity. You see, even wisdom and knowledge are ‘worse than worthless’ when they are misguided and wrongheaded. The human condition has been challenged from the very beginning with the temptation to be one’s own god.  We want to claim authority for our own destiny. Pursue absolute autonomy for our own selves.  Wallow in pure selfishness.  The ultimate goal of the “Godless” one is self-fulfillment – whatever evil form that might take.

The desire to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and thus disobey God, while seeking to be God, always leads down into the pit of self-destruction.

To lift up self is to put down God. To put down God is to despise one’s own life. The result of such is always unexpected destruction and loss.

Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up.  To lose one’s life in God is to find true life.
