But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. (ESV)
In a day and age when health and wealth are so overemphasized in relation to faith, I’m afraid this passage is often misused. Clearly the healing promised here to be delivered by the Messiah is a healing that far exceeds any healing of the body. Jesus has delivered us from our transgressions – the sickness of our soul. He has taken the punishment we deserved for our sin and through the cross has provided for us a peace that truly passes understanding. His healing is eternal and thus concerned with the eternal aspect of our existence – our soul – who we are.
He has healed the wounds that affect us in our deepest being.
He has redeemed our essence.
He has freed us to be who we were created to be – forever.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.Thanks be to God!
