Broken Covenant – Ezekiel 33:23-26

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, those who live in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was only one person, yet he received possession of the land. But we are many; the land has been given to us as a possession.’ Therefore say to them: This is what the Lord God says: You eat meat with blood in it, raise your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. Should you then receive possession of the land? You have relied on your swords, you have committed detestable acts, and each of you has defiled his neighbor’s wife. Should you then receive possession of the land?

They have not kept their covenant with God and Father God will not be made a fool. A covenant requires that both parties keep their commitment. Father God has and will. Israel has rebelled in every way that is significant and yet still feel the promises of the covenant are theirs. No! To rebel is to reject. God is gracious and forgiving and long suffering; however, there comes a day of reckoning when He says, ‘No! You have defiled my covenant in the most base ways. It is broken.’ God always keeps His end of every agreement. The fundamental reason the old covenant was replaced was because the people of Israel were unable and unwilling to keep it – the people were at fault. Thus, a new and better covenant has been implemented because Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, has perfectly kept OUR end of it and, because of His faithfulness, we now have the salvation that accompanies His obedience. In effect, God has kept both ends of the agreement and we are the beneficiaries.

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.
