Interpreting the Times – Luke 12:56

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

As with all Scripture, this statement of Christ must be kept in context. I do not believe He is necessarily referring to ‘all times’, that we must be able to interpret them, other than to know what He has emphasized in His words above this particular statement, that we must be ready at any day for His return.

Luke 12:40, “You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”

His reference, I believe, in this context, is to those Jewish people who should know that He is the fulfillment of all OT prophecy and that the Kingdom has come with His advent. John says ‘You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have life; however, it is they that point to Me and you refuse to come to Me.’ These NT era Jewish leaders should have been able to interpret the times in light of scripture and see that Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of prophecy and that in Him they had life. For us I believe the interpretation is even more direct: Jesus is here and impacts every single thing we say and do on this planet. The Kingdom of God has come. We interpret the present time and all of eternity in that light.

Jesus changes everything.
