Interpreting the Times – Luke 12:56

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

As with all Scripture, this statement of Christ must be kept in context. I do not believe He is necessarily referring to ‘all times’, that we must be able to interpret them, other than to know what He has emphasized in His words above this particular statement, that we must be ready at any day for His return.

Luke 12:40, “You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”

His reference, I believe, in this context, is to those Jewish people who should know that He is the fulfillment of all OT prophecy and that the Kingdom has come with His advent. John says ‘You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have life; however, it is they that point to Me and you refuse to come to Me.’ These NT era Jewish leaders should have been able to interpret the times in light of scripture and see that Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of prophecy and that in Him they had life. For us I believe the interpretation is even more direct: Jesus has come and will return. This truth impacts every single thing we say and do on this planet. The Kingdom of God has come. The Holy Spirit is here among us seeking to glorify Jesus through everything we say and do. We interpret the present time and all of eternity in that light knowing also that Jesus Christ will physically return in His fullness, power and glory. We are wise to know that we exist in that timeframe between His earthly appearances. He has come in humility and love and many of those to whom He came missed Him. He will come again in power and glory. We must be expectant and ready for no one will miss His return. All or our focus revolves around His advent, His presence among us and His return.

Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

We praise Him for His coming.

We live within His presence.

We long for His appearing.

Jesus changes everything. Watch and pray.
