What Charge? – John 18:30

They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”

This is categorically NOT an accusation. It is an assumption by the Jewish rulers that Pilate will submit to whatever they have decided. They have no rational, supportable accusation against Jesus. There is no charge. They are simply working to railroad a Man by whom they are threatened. The ‘charge’ in their minds and in the mind of the high priest is that Jesus must die for the sake of the nation in order to protect Jewish power. Jesus’ morality threatens them so they will simply falsely charge Him and have Him murdered. Initially, Pilate will have no part of it; yet, the pressure of political pain will eventually lead him to capitulate. It is dark, sad and evil from every side. There is no supportable charge. They have no accusation.

Jesus of Nazareth was innocent. The charges were bogus. Darkness hated Him because He was and is and will always be Light. The Light was crucified carrying our sins to the cross that we might be forgiven and saved and enter into the Eternal light and Glory of God one day. The message of the cross may seem like foolishness to many but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God!
