No Condemnation? – Romans 8.1

Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

The raging battle within our bodies is ongoing. The search for purity never ends. Evil thoughts and actions stalk our minds and the focus of the world tempts us to succumb. It is a tension that I still do not fully understand. It can lead one to question their salvation and sometimes even their sanity. Our existence is replete with examples of people who succumb and shrink back. Evil in our bodies is no religious myth regardless of how those enlightened ones around us frame the heart and motives of humankind. We are not inherently good. Period. Our propensity is toward evil. Our minds are easily swayed. Desensitization ensues and death results. The battle can be lost if we dare admit it.

Out of the midst of this morbid truth comes a light unlike any other. A ray of cleansing Hope almost unbelievable. A verse that makes the believer uncomfortable. We know who we are on the inside. We wonder if Paul really understands what he is saying. Can something truly remove the internal, constant condemnation we feel? Can a heart with evil intent be changed? It is more than an honest person can fathom. The dishonest never consider it but those who look at themselves and face the blackness inside can’t ignore it. It is life and light. Christ has laid down the law and it is so good we almost can’t accept it. It is not the law that leads to death. It is the law of the Spirit and life.

For we who are giving ourselves to Jesus, the Spirit of God Himself resides within. It is this law of Christ that has set us free. It ushers in hope, resolve, faithfulness. He literally pours the love of God into our failing hearts and revives us with His life. It is a statement of fact not an article of debate. There is no condemnation at all. None. I can’t fathom it but hold tightly to it. I need it. I want it. I long for more of the One who offers such hope.

Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord. Pour out your Spirit through me and through all who are claiming this promise.

Romans 7:24-25
Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
