But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
There is action on our part involved here. God makes a new self available and we are called to put off the old self and put on the new self. We actively work to change our thought habits, language and perspective to be in line with the new self. We won’t set worthless things before our eyes nor fill our ears with such. We have been redeemed and are being transformed as we commit ourselves to the new self. We are shucking the old self daily and putting on the new self. Our focus and emphasis is on the new self in our language and our actions. The old self was one that was caught up with so called pleasures and self fulfillment. The new self is blessed with righteousness and selflessness. The joy of being released from the damning desires of the flesh into the liberating life of the Spirit which is less about us and more about others is incredible. Thanks be to God!
