Big Ears, Tight Lips, Long Fuses, Moral Purity – James 1:19-21

My dearly loved brothers, understand this: Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and evil, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save you.

Angrily speaking your mind based on what you think you heard is popular these days – even for the Christian. Plus, the language you use is irrelevant. There’s no such thing as a ‘dirty’ word any more. Say what you want, when you want, wherever you want. It’s your right. No need to worry about what ears are around to hear. No need to worry about the implications of speaking filth. We have to speak the language of the culture in order to reach them. I guess there are some who even think we need to live and act like the culture in order to reach them. Listen lightly. Be offended. Respond quickly. Be angry! It works so it must be true. We have rights too, you know!

God addresses this unbiblical mindset directly here via His servant James. I paraphrase loosely. ‘Do you really think loose lips, closed ears and fleshly anger can produce God’s righteousness in you or in anyone else for that matter? Seriously? Don’t be ridiculous! You cannot allow anger to reign in your behavior saying whatever you like while only listening to yourself and expect to have the righteousness of God in your life. It is a major FAIL! Get rid of this morally filthy attitude and these evil actions and listen to God’s Word within you! It is your only hope for salvation’.

Father God still expects us to control our temper. Let’s face it, most of the time we get angry is because we have been personally offended not because someone else ‘has been wronged’. He still expects us to listen intently with love and He still expects us to keep our mouths shut when someone does not benefit from our empty words. In the words of the old cowboy proverb: ‘Never miss a good opportunity to shut up!’ Plus, we are still called to moral purity. We are still called to revere the Written and implanted Word Of God. The Holy Spirit is still alive within us bringing the truth of God to us as each situation warrants and He will never contradict the Written Revelation of His Holy Scriptures. God still says, ‘Listen to Me. I have the words of life.’

It is safe to say that we all need to listen more, say less, stay calm and pursue moral purity. God within us gives the potential and the power.

Thanks be to God!
