Speaking For God – 1 Chronicles 17:2-4

So Nathan told David, “Do all that is on your heart, for God is with you.”

But that night the word of God came to Nathan: “Go to David My servant and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: You are not the one to build Me a house to dwell in.

It can definitely be misleading whenever even a prophet of God speaks before clearly hearing direction from God. Nathan had no desire to mislead David – only to encourage him. Yet, his initial direction was out of step with God’s will so Father God quickly redirected him.

There is a clear principle for the prophet, preacher and teacher in this encounter. God will gently and clearly correct even the words of His prophet whenever that one is willing to listen and modify his pronouncement. A sensitive ear and a tender heart are prerequisites for prophets, preachers and teachers and for anyone else who dares to speak for God.
