How Not To Win Friends and Influence People – Luke 11.39-54

Author’s note: Truth informs. Love corrects. Jesus did not live to make surface level friends. He lived to obey His Father and save men and women from Hell.

Luke 11:29 – As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: “This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

Luke 11:39 – But the Lord said to him: “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.

Luke 11:46 – Then He said: “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens that are hard to carry, yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.

Dale Carnegie would have been so disappointed with Lord Jesus as would most of our church congregations today. Just as the crowds begin to increase and His popularity is rising He begins to call people to account. In the midst of great popularity and while dining at the Big Dog’s house, He begins to address the darkness of their hearts and the hypocrisy of their ways. What poor table manners. How unexpected and rude of Jesus. How dare He! These men are listening to Him and following Him, at least to some extent; yet, He does not entrust Himself to them for He knows what is in a man. He addresses their hypocrisy and seals their hatred for Him. His concern is not what others, even church boss men, will think. His concern is what Father God will think and with pursuing His will. These whitewashed leaders are misleading God’s children. Jesus, with supernatural courage, addresses them directly and angers them deeply. By standing solidly for Truth in the face of those who seemingly hold His fate in their hands, Lord Jesus signs His own death warrant – all out of His deep desire to please His Father and fulfill His will.

Father God, grant me and those of us living in this evil day, the resolve, courage and focus of Jesus Christ. Take our eyes off of what others think and fix them firmly on You. We are setting our faces toward Heaven. We are longing for Your return. Maranatha!
