Teach us to number our days carefully
so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.
The realization and acceptance of our own mortality works to keep us wise and humble. Dwelling on the limited nature of our existence on this earth grows wisdom in our hearts. Whatever we know or accomplish here in this temporary existence is virtually irrelevant in the span of eternity. We are a flash. God is eternal.
We tend to think we are so smart, so educated; yet, how can our tiny, finite minds understand the vastness of God? How can we understand His wisdom when our perspective is so limited? He sees from the perspective of eternity. We live in the circumspectness of this life. Our lives are so short. His life is ‘to infinity and beyond’. (Thank you, Buzz Lightyear.)
We must learn to number our days, accept our mortality, think about the finitude of our existence so that we might remain humble and receive the wisdom that flows from such humility as Father God grants it to us. Carefully numbering our days develops the wisdom of God in our hearts.
