Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts, and give your rewards to someone else; however, I will read the inscription for the king and make the interpretation known to him.
Daniels answer and resolve reflects the heart of a true prophet and man of God. He is not motivated by gifts or rewards. His motivation is obedience and truth. He has no qualms telling one of the world’s most powerful kings, “No thanks. Keep your stuff.” We gain insight into a man when we know what motivates him and what does not. We also see the strength or weakness of a man when he is directly confronted with temptation and potential suffering. Daniel has every opportunity to take credit, take the stuff, avoid any potential suffering and take the glory from God; however, the faithful man of God never forgets from Whom His spiritual gifts and insights come. They are of God as He, the prophet, is of God. Daniel is resolved to take the opportunities Father God gives him and use them to glorify Him. His eyes are set on His Father and no man or reward will turn Him. Father, grant us all such resolve.
