Questioning – John 18:23

Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.” When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?”If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?”

Jesus opens up even His direct accusers and eventual murderers with a question. Even as He is being marched to His death, He is approaching people in such a way as to open them up to their own deceptive presuppositions and assumptions. It shows His care even for those who were leading Him to the slaughter.

“Why would you hit an innocent man?

Jesus opens us up to our deepest motives with the skill of a spiritual surgeon and His motives are perfectly pure. He loves us. His Word truly is sharper than any two-edged sword piercing deep within us below flesh and bone into our hearts. He probes those He loves in order to bring them from death to life. His Word is Life. We must stay tender to His probing lest we become hard hearted and defy His love.
