Defeating Anger – Proverbs 19:11

Proverbs 19:11 (ESV)
Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

Proverbs 19:11 (HCSB)
A person’s insight gives him patience,
and his virtue is to overlook an offense.

Proverbs 19:11 (NASB)
A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger,
And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.

Human, natural anger is deadly. It surges from within our offended self and snaps like a turtle. It lies underground waiting for an opportunity to destroy a day, a moment, a gathering, even a relationship. Its motivation is deceptive often clothing itself in the garb of righteousness, self-righteousness. Discretion is its enemy, yet indiscretion and indignity are its fuel. It is an asp ready and waiting to destroy what is without and what is within. It stalks us when we are young and strong and attacks us when we are old and weak. When it should be decreasing in my life it seems I find it increasing.

Lord Jesus, be this Discretion, Good Sense and Insight in my life of which the writer speaks. You are my Life. Live in me more fully Lord. Forgive me for befriending anger. Bring Your peace and discipline more fully into my heart.
