Sick and Unhealthy – Luke 5:31-32

And Jesus answered and said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.”

Call me dull if you want, but it hit me hard today that as long as we pretend we have it all together and that we are healthy inside, Jesus has nothing to offer us. He didn’t come for pretentious people who claim to be healthy and well spiritually. He came to help and heal sick people, eternally. The preacher at the St. John’s Baptist church was right. Dr. Jesus is a physician of the soul. He heals lives. Until we realize the fact that we are black with sin, we’ve missed out on the primary mission of Lord Jesus.

Certainly, there is plenty to learn from Teacher Jesus regardless of our perspective on our own heart. He is Truth, so whatever He says that we apply to our lives helps. Truth always works. However, from my point of view, all of this is secondary to His primary mission. Until we come to ourselves as the prodigal son did and fall on our face before Dr. Jesus, we are lost. Terminally ill. Sickness cannot be addressed by the doctor if we never admit we’re ill. We must humble our sick sinful selves before Him if we want the best of all He offers. He did not come for the healthy and righteous. That may sound strange, but it is true. He came for penitent sinners. Repentance is His call to the sick sinner.

We submit our sinful selves to You in repentance, Lord Jesus. Thank you for coming for sorry folks like us. All of our hope is in You.
