The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He made Himself out to be the Son of God!”
Actually, He has always been the Son of God. His miracles and His perfectly lived life validated the claims He made. He was and is and always will be the eternal Son of God.
John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
John 14:6
Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.
His existence is eternal, infinite – a logical necessity for we finite creatures. At some point, finite creatures such as ourselves must have a beginning. It is a logical necessity. Jesus Christ is that eternal Entity who has brought all finite beings into existence and has extended the offer of eternal life to them. He is the firstborn over all of creation. The image of the invisible God. All things were made through Him and in Him all things hold together.
