Disastrous Evil – Proverbs 13:21

Disaster pursues sinners,
but good rewards the righteous.

The one who knows to do right, and I am convinced that all know this, and yet pursues evil intentionally, will consistently see trouble and pain in his rear view mirror. He brings trouble into his life in exchange for whatever he thinks he is profiting. Disaster follows evil and leaves a man devastated all through no one’s fault but his own. This disaster almost seems to take on a life of its own. It is the natural result of the pursuit of evil and the ignoring of God’s commandment. It’s a rule of our existence and a consequence of sin.

The proverb writer, however, does not leave us wallowing in the hard truth of sin’s consequences. He reminds us that as disaster follows evil, good follows righteousness. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights and enlightens the life of those who pursue righteousness. The righteousness of Christ is ours through faith and the reward is good beyond compare. As we choose to pursue righteousness, the goodness of God falls upon us as the reward of a gracious Father and a faithful life. Disaster may follow the sinner but the goodness of Jesus is above, below, before and behind the believer!

May the giver of all good things be glorified by all who are receiving His goodness!
