Good Luck Charm ‘Faith’ – Judges 17:13

Then Micah said, “Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, seeing I have a Levite as priest.”

How clearly Micah’s statement illustrates the old, ‘God is my good luck charm mentality.’ Put God in your box and He’s right there to do whatever you want. Just take Him out when you need Him and put Him away when He’s not needed. Pay your yearly dues, dress Him up with your little self-made idols and all will be good. Thus we deceive ourselves. We long to control God instead of releasing all control to Him.

Surely the Levite priest in this historical narrative knew that this is not how our Father operates.

God will not be housed in our little paradigms. He is not a tame Lion and He will never bless evil. He cannot be poured into a mold and stood up on our hearth or stuck to our dash. He is ever-present, all-knowing and all-powerful.

He may leave us to wallow in our own religious messes for a while but a day of reckoning will come. He will not be mocked.

YHWH is not a small little god who can be bandied about for our own personal benefit. He refuses to be represented by a physical image, in effect, limiting His influence. He is Spirit. He is Sovereign.

He will either reign in your obedient life of faith or eventually rain on your rebellious life of unbelief.

As J.B. Phillips wrote, ‘Your god is too small.’ Is He too small in your life? Have you shrunken Him into some earth bound form to tote around as you please? Tiny fake gods lead only to pain and confusion. Father God leads to true Life and true Love. He is Lord over all.
