“This is the end of the interpretation. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts terrified me greatly, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Daniel’s reaction to this vision and interpretation from God’s messengers is amazing to me! This is the man who could stand in a den of lions and trust God seemingly without fear. This is the man who stood before the most powerful king on earth at the time and not only recounted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream but also interpreted it honestly. This is God’s man who is known for his great discipline and faithfulness. Yet, when he receives this Word and vision from God, it is so profound and so powerful that it ‘scares him sick’. These were deeply significant and terrifying prophesies! So profound are these thoughts that they affect his complexion and he can’t even speak about them. When God reveals His future plans to mortal men it is not always a pleasant experience for those who are chosen to receive the revelation.
We often think about the joy associated with being God’s prophet and receiving God’s revelation. Daniel’s reaction here should give us pause for thought. Seeing God’s visions and receiving His revelation from His heavenly messengers is not alway ‘happy, happy, joy, joy’. This encounter terrified and humbled one of the most faithful prophets of God ever to walk this earth. When God speaks, it is serious. We would be wise to take such a truth to heart knowing that He still speaks today.
He is there. He is not silent.
