The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
This truth about Father God is often overlooked by the atheists and skeptics of our day. They characterize the God of the Old Testament as cruel and vengeful. They pull hard to understand verses and plaster them on Father God as if those verses alone describe Him fully, using them to cast doubt on His nature. God is perfect in His application of justice and love. He must be if He is to be the God of goodness and mercy. His mercy extends to those who need deliverance from evil men and women and thus God’s wrath is implemented on behalf of the helpless and against evil men. But why do these skeptics miss verses like these? Why overlook these powerfully good truths about the Creator’s basic nature? Father God’s fundamental nature is good, merciful, loving and gracious. He doesn’t jump to anger nor is He capricious in His justice. He is good to all. He is merciful to all. He is gracious and abounding in a never wavering love for all. Even the most basic fact of His speaking us into existence reveals this. He did not have to create us. This is the God of the Old and New Testaments. This is the Father from whom King David drew strength and forgiveness. This is the Father who enfleshed His Son that He might demonstrate among us Grace and Truth.
God must manifest His wrath against sin for even this wrath flows from His mercy, grace and love. He longs for His creation to have life and the rebellion of sin in any form leads only to death. God truly is good to all that He has made showing compassion on all. Thanks be to God.
He is consistently misrepresented in these evil times of disobedience; yet, His true nature is clearly revealed in His Written Revelation, the Holy Scriptures. He and His Word always rise up to outlive those who seek their demise. The One Who was, Is and Is To Come. This is Hope.
