Choosing God’s Protection – Exodus 9:19-20

“‘Now therefore send, get your livestock and all that you have in the field into safe shelter, for every man and beast that is in the field and is not brought home will die when the hail falls on them.'”Then whoever feared the word of the Lord among the servants of Pharaoh hurried his slaves and his livestock into the houses, but whoever did not pay attention to the word of the Lord left his slaves and his livestock in the field.

God allowed even those who were not of the Israelites to choose how they would respond. He did not force them to obey and take action. In effect, He wanted willing participants. He allowed them to choose either His protection or destruction. God won’t force His protection upon anyone. He gives us the self dignity of choosing. The fear of the Word of the Lord protects any who listen and respond.

This appears to be the first opportunity for the Egyptians to demonstrate THEIR faith in YHWH. YHWH knows there is the possibility of loss of life and so He warns those who will be at risk. They are given the opportunity to act in accordance with His word that He has offered out of His concern for their welfare. YHWH cares for and loves all people and does not want anyone to perish or suffer.

We can choose to walk according to His instruction and thus receive His protection – or not. Obedience leads to life.
