In this one verse, Father God clearly delineates the true problem with alcohol – overindulgence and abuse. Staggering begins when self control has ended. It is indicative of drunkenness and leads only to personal destruction. God gave us wine to gladden the heart. He created fermented beverages but, as with every good gift, He did not create it to be abused. Overindulgence in every pleasure leads to ruin. God puts limits on pleasure for our benefit. Alcohol is no exception. Self control is of the harvest of the Spirit because God honors discipline. He knows what is best for us. Trust Him.
